Syringe Markings & Needle Gauge Explained

Understand syringe scales, capacity, needle gauge and length, with questions to discuss with your dispensing pharmacist.

Syringe types & scales

A syringe may be marked in millilitres (ml) or in units for a specified insulin concentration. Check both its capacity and its smallest marked interval.

A unit marking is not a universal peptide dose. Ask the pharmacist to show the exact prescribed volume on the exact syringe supplied. FDA reports describe errors caused by confusion between milligrams, millilitres and syringe units. FDA source

Needle gauge & length

Gauge describes needle diameter; length is a separate measurement, usually given in millimetres. A higher gauge number generally describes a thinner needle.

Needle choice depends on the device, the prescribed route and the individual. Ask a qualified healthcare professional to confirm a compatible needle and demonstrate its use. A product’s vial strength does not tell you which needle to choose.
